Pool finishes: choosing and installing them well

A pool’s surface and coping in Marrakech: travertine, stone, porcelain, mosaic. Chlorine and sun resistance, grip and the right order of work.

Around a Marrakech pool, the surface must stay cool under the sun, non-slip when wet, and resistant to chlorine and thermal swings. Tumbled travertine and pale natural stone dominate for surrounds; mosaic and porcelain for the basin. The order of installation is crucial: the basin is tiled first, then the coping is laid — never the reverse.

The demands specific to a Marrakech pool

Three requirements stack up: the surface mustn't burn feet in summer (pale colour, low absorption), it must stay non-slip when wet (textured or tumbled finish), and it must take chlorine and hot/cold cycles without breaking down. This is why tumbled travertine and pale limestones are the big favourites for surrounds, paired with mosaic or a technical porcelain in the basin.

Coping: the detail that makes everything

Coping is cut with a rounded nose and a drip groove underneath so overflow water doesn't run down the wall. It is laid after the basin surface, with a slight fall to the outside to carry water away from the water line. A flexible perimeter joint absorbs movement between the surround and the basin.

Waterproofing and durability

Under the basin surface, waterproofing is the true guarantee: a system suited to permanent immersion, applied before laying. The surround surface receives a chlorine-resistant sealer, renewed every two to three years. Without these treatments, the limestone stains and chlorine attacks the joints.

Frequently asked questions

Tumbled travertine and pale limestones: their colour and mass limit heat build-up, unlike dark tile or dark stone.
