Outdoor tile suited to Marrakech

Choosing outdoor tile for Marrakech’s climate: non-slip grip, sun resistance, expansion joints and decoupled installation. The terrace guide.

A terrace or outdoor pathway in Marrakech faces intense sun, wide day/night thermal swings and rare but heavy rain. The right surface is pale, non-slip (R11 minimum in wet zones), low-absorption, and above all laid with expansion joints and a decoupled substrate. The material matters less than the quality of the installation when it comes to ground movement.

What breaks outdoor tile

It's almost never the material: it's movement. Under Marrakech's sun, a slab expands by day and contracts by night. Without perimeter and intermediate expansion joints, and without decoupling from the substrate, that movement eventually cracks the surface or makes tiles sound hollow. A successful outdoor installation is first of all one that lets the surface breathe.

Choosing the surface well

Tumbled travertine for elegance and coolness; 20 mm outdoor porcelain for robustness (layable on pedestals or bedded); pale natural stone for pathways. In every case, aim for a pale colour for summer comfort and a textured surface for grip, especially near a pool or on steps.

Correct outdoor installation

Screed with a 1 to 2 % fall to drain water, decoupling, full back-buttering, distributed expansion joints, and flexible joints suited to the outdoors. At junctions with walls and the house, a flexible perimeter joint stops the slab pushing against the structure.

Frequently asked questions

Visually yes, with ranges offered in a smooth indoor version and a non-slip outdoor version. Technically, the outdoor version must be more non-slip, and the outdoor installation must include expansion joints and a fall.
