Comparisons

Marble or porcelain: which should you choose?

Natural marble versus marble-effect porcelain: price, maintenance, durability and look. The honest comparison to choose room by room.

Marble is a unique natural stone — warm and prestigious, but porous and sensitive to acids; porcelain (marble-effect stoneware) mimics its veining, doesn't stain and resists wear and frost better. The right choice depends on the room: marble for showpiece and low-moisture spaces, porcelain for heavy-traffic floors, kitchens, pool surrounds and exposed façades.

The difference in nature

Marble is quarried stone: every slab is unique, with veining you can book-match (mirror). It is warm to the touch and ages into a patina. But it is porous: wine, lemon or a descaler will etch it if it isn't protected. Porcelain is a fired product, non-porous: the marble patterns are printed then vitrified. It doesn't stain, resists frost and UV, but remains an imitation — the look, superb from a distance, lacks the depth of real stone.

The room-by-room choice

Entrance hall, showpiece staircase, living room: marble wins for prestige. Bathroom: marble for luxury (with sealer and gentle care) or a large porcelain slab for peace of mind. Kitchen, laundry, high-traffic floors: porcelain. Pool surround, terrace, south-facing façade: porcelain or travertine, for resistance to chlorine, sun and Marrakech's thermal swings.

The real cost

Marble costs more to buy and, above all, to maintain (sealing, care, occasional restoration by grinding). Porcelain costs less to maintain, but a quality large format and its laser installation represent a comparable investment. The real calculation is made over time and by the use of each room, not per isolated square metre.

Frequently asked questions

High-end stoneware, in large format with through-body veining, is very convincing. The difference shows mostly up close and in raking light — hence the importance of choosing a quality slab and a careful installation.
